Charm Friday Quilt – Your Next Summer Charm Adventure
Welcome back to the Summer Charm Series—where charm packs turn into quilts faster than you can say TGIF! This weekend, we’re stitching up the Charm Friday Quilt: a lively mix of nine-patch blocks and simple squares that creates the perfect balance of scrappy and classic.
Whether you’re quilting along with friends or sneaking in some weekend sewing time, this one is all about charm-packed fun.

What You’ll Need
To make your own 58" × 70½" quilt, gather:
- (9) Moda Charm Packs OR (15) light and (13) dark fat quarters
- 5/8 yard for Binding
- 5½ yards for Backing
- 68" × 80" Batting
Before beginning, sort your charm packs into lights and darks.
Step 1 – Cut Your Pieces
Charm packs make this easy!
- Lights: cut (223) rectangles 2" × 5" and (20) charms in half diagonally.
- Darks: cut (224) rectangles 2" × 5".
- Binding: slice 7 strips 2½" × WOF.
Helpful Notion: A June Tailor Shape Cut Ruler (or Shape Cut Plus) will make cutting the rectangles a breeze.
Step 2 – Build the Strip Sets
This is where the magic begins.
- Sew (2) dark + (1) light rectangle → press to the dark → make 75.
- Sew (2) light + (1) dark rectangle → press to the dark → make 74.
- Subcut them all into 2" wide segments for a stack of ready-to-go units.
Step 3 – Stitch Your Nine Patches
Combine those little segments into (50) Nine Patch A blocks and (49) Nine Patch B blocks.
Think of them as siblings—same family, different personalities.
Designer’s Tip: Fingerpress seams in alternate directions as you stitch the segments together for perfectly nested seams.
Step 4 – Lay Out the Quilt Top
Now for the aha! moment. Arrange your:
- 99 Nine Patch blocks
- 80 charm squares (40 light + 40 dark)
- 36 setting triangles
- 4 corner triangles
Piece them into 19 rows and then join the rows together.
Designer’s Tip: The setting triangles are intentionally cut so the block points “float” along the edges of the quilt. Don’t worry—it’s part of the charm! If you prefer full points, you can cut a coordinating fabric into oversized triangles and trim.
And isn't it amazing to see how different this quilt looks with different fabrics?
Step 5 – Quilt + Bind
Layer your top with batting and backing, quilt however you love best, and finish with your binding strips.
And just like that—you’ve got a quilt that feels like a Friday celebration!
